A 13-year-old girl, reported missing by her family three weeks ago, was found dead near a garbage bin in Fort Lauderdale, police said Wednesday.
Police are investigating the death of Neica Marie Gibbs,of Fort Lauderdale, as a homicide.
''This case has been under an active investigation and investigators have remained in close contact with the family,'' said Fort Lauderdale Sgt. Frank Sousa in a statement to the media.
Police are not disclosing the circumstances of the young girl's death.
Gibbs' body was first discovered at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday when police got a call that a body was lying on the ground outside a garbage bin near Southwest 28th Avenue and Sixth Drive.
The body, according to Sousa, had been there ``an extended period of time.''
