15-year-old Tonetta was seen walking home from school on March 16, 1989 in Chattanooga, Tennessee around 2:55pm. A witness observed Tonetta being abducted approximently one-half block from her home around 3:00pm. Several unidentified suspects jumped out of a tan and yellow vehicle with Tennessee license plates numbered LKH 902, force Tonetta into the vehicle, and drive away. The witness told the police that she and her husband chased the vehicle and called the police with its license number. Tonetta's mother filed a missing persons' report with the police 8 hours later when Tonetta didn't come home.
The license number of the vehicle involved in Tonetta's abduction was traced back to Jeffrey Jones, who was previously convicted of rape and aggravated sexual assault, & served 8 years in prison. He was released a year before Tonetta vanished. Authorities had determined Jeffrey raped another woman who lived in his apartment complex two months before Tonetta disappeared. Jeffrey committed suicide and was found dead in his van on March 18th, 2 days after Tonetta was abducted. Jeffrey died of carbon monoxide poisoning. There hasn't been any trace of Tonetta since, but there have been rumors that Tonetta was forced into prostitution and possibly taken to California. Tonetta's case remains unsolved.
Tonetta's hair was curly and trimmed short on the top and sides longer in the back at the time of her disapperance in 1989. She has pierced ears and several of her teeth are capped or have fillings. Tonetta was last seen wearing a pink & white striped blouse, denim skirt, and white sneakers.
